Stability Test of Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) Leaf Extract Gel and Antibacterial Activity Against Staphylococcus aureus / Uji Stabilitas Gel Ekstrak Daun Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) dan Aktivitas Antibakteri Terhadap Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium that can multiply in body tissues and cause disease. Treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can be done with the use of antibacterial agents. One natural ingredient that contains active compounds with potential antibacterial properties is mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris L.). This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity and physical stability of mugwort leaf extract gel against Staphylococcus aureus. The method used to test antibacterial activity in this study was disc diffusion, measuring the zone of inhibition formed around the paper disc. The concentrations of mugwort leaf extract gel tested and formulated were 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. The physical stability of the gel was tested using a cycling test, with observations before and after the test. The results showed that mugwort leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The antibacterial activity test for the gel yielded results of 5% gel: 4.17 mm, 7.5%: 5.67 mm, and 10%: 8.17 mm. The physical stability test results showed that the gel was homogeneous, had good spreadability and pH, and had good physical stability.

Staphylococcus aureus merupakan bakteri gram positif yang dapat berkembang biak di dalam jaringan tubuh dan menyebabkan terjadinya penyakit. Pengobatan infeksi yang disebabkan oleh bakteri Staphylococcus aureus dapat dilakukan dengan penggunaan antibakteri. Salah satu bahan alam yang mempunyai senyawa aktif berpotensi sebagai antibakteri adalah daun mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.). Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri gel ekstrak daun mugwort terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus, serta menguji stabilitas fisik gel ekstrak daun mugwort. Metode yang digunakan untuk uji aktivitas antibakteri pada penelitian ini yaitu difusi cakram dengan pengukuran zona hambat yang terbentuk di sekitar kertas cakram. Konsentrasi gel ekstrak daun mugwort yang diuji dan diformulasikan yaitu 5%, 7,5% dan 10%. Uji stabilitas fisik gel dilakukan dengan metode cycling test dengan pengamatan sebelum dan sesudah uji. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak daun mugwort memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Pada uji aktivitas antibakteri gel didapatkan hasil pengujian gel 5%: 4,17 mm, 7,5%: 5,67 mm,  dan 10%: 8,17 mm. Hasil uji stabilitas fisik gel dengan ekstrak daun mugwort 5%, 7,5% dan 10% menunjukkan bahwa gel homogen, dengan pH 5,89±0,15 - 5,22±0,11, memiliki daya sebar 4,29±0,51 - 5,04±0,81 cm, dan viskositas  9811,57±2,66 - 9812,30±1,73 mPa.s. Gel ekstrak daun mugwort memiliki stabilitas fisik yang baik.
